Why aerate your pond?

Good aeration is essential to the overall health of your garden pool in lots of ways.

Most obviously, fish require oxygen to live. More oxygen is required on warm, sunny days because warm water is capable of holding less oxygen than cooler water.

That's why it's common to lose fish during warm, humid weather.

Less obviously, the aerobic bacteria that colonise your pool and filter, rendering it much more effective by consuming the toxic ammonia your fish produce, require huge amounts of oxygen in order to function. It's a little known fact that up to 80% of the available oxygen is consumed by filtration bacteria.

Good filtration requires good aeration. A well aerated garden pool will also have naturally lower algae levels. Aeration acts to oxidise several algal nutrients, making them less bio-available to the algae, retarding growth and producing clearer, healthier pond water.

The efficiency of aeration is greatly enhanced by the use of good air diffusers. Air diffusers break up the flow of air into smaller, finer bubbles which, collectively, have a larger surface area through which oxygen may diffuse into the pond water.
